How the Environment Affects Print
Thinking about how and where your printing is going to be displayed is a key factor in determining how to design it and what materials to use. Think about who will be using your print and where it will be. If you’re business card is going to be in someone’s wallet, should you use a coating so it stays nicer for longer? If so, are you going to use matt, gloss or UV?
With such a diverse range of materials available, you need to think about which option is best for you in terms of design, environment and budget.
LIGHTING
Consider where your printing will be displayed because at the end of the day you want your marketing to stand out. Be aware of the difference between your artwork in Photoshop and your printed material in a poorly lit store. In particular, think carefully about colour choice.
Some colours, like red, catch attention and look great during the day but fade into grey at night or in poorly lit areas. If you’re artwork is going to be in a window, then stay away from gloss finishes as they may be difficult to see. If you’re brochures are going to be displayed for a long time, then choose a different shade of white so that when the colour fades, it still looks fresh.
Who knew there was so much to take into account?
WEATHER
Is your poster going to be in direct sunlight? Or outdoors? Using UV and water-resistant materials will help weatherproof your printing and make it last longer. Although all inks fade, some last longer than others. Another example is that high gloss finishes stand up to weather better than matt finishes.
It is important to keep in mind that the material you choose will affect the way the design looks. Design your printing based on that materials you are printing on.
