Copy tips for great marketing

Communicating to your existing and potential customers through marketing is important. It reinforces what you have communicated verbally and gives more in depth information. Having printed information creates a sense of validity to your company and the message you portray. Design gets initial attention but your copy is what gets your audience to act.

Here are a few tips on what to consider when writing your next marketing piece:

  1. Your audience.

In order to communicate effectively the first thing you should consider is this- who am I communicating with? Thinking about your audience and how they would react to different styles of writing will help you make an informed decision before you start.

  1. Your message.

Choose one simple message that you want to convey. It needs to be a message that is important to your audience and will capture their attention. Too much information or too many messages simply confuse your audience and detract from your marketing. Keep it simple!

  1. Your language.

Using technical jargon can make you sound knowledgeable but can also confuse or create a barrier between you and your audience. This means you should only use industry specific terms if your audience are industry experts. If you have a broader audience than the golden rule is to keep it simple. Being conversational, yet professional, can create a rapport between yourself and your reader. As a guideline, write how you would speak to your audience but make sure to keep it professional!

  1. Your call to action.

You are writing marketing materials to try to be persuasive. Often great marketing gets the attention of its audience at which point they put it aside for a later time. Don’t be forgotten! Have an immediate call to action that motivates your audience to do something, whether it be calling you to take advantage of a limited offer or simply visiting your website for further information.

Each of these aspects need to be considered before you begin writing your copy. Always have your audience in mind as well as the purpose behind your writing. With effective copy, your customers will find it hard to resist your message.
