Digital vs Offset Printing

What’s the difference?

Think about your printer at home. It has four ink cartridges that run across the page to form colours. This is the same process in digital printing. All colours are made up tiny dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). Digital printing is a fairly simple process which has improved drastically with new technologies.

The offset printing process is far more complex and as a result generally produces better quality and more exact colour management.

Digital printing is more cost effective on smaller run projects because it does not require much set up. The automated process makes it simple and fast. The offset printing process is more cost effective over longer run projects because the set up costs are absorbed by the quantity of material printed.

If you would like to know more about the offset printing process visit our YouTube page for a demonstration or call us to speak to our knowledgeable account managers or arrange a facilities tour!

Which one should I use?

If you look aren’t sure what method you should use there is a general rule of thumb:

  • Digital printing is more cost effective for short run work and is fast
  • Offset printing is great for longer runs and to get more exact colour matches. It is slightly better quality and can be used on a wider range of stocks and gsms.
